SPSS - General Information

IBM SPSS is a computer program used for statistical analysis that Alliant International University licenses for academic use. Select the IBM SPSS icon to go to their web site.


Alliant International University utilizes IBM SPSS Statistics Premium Bundle Campus Edition and IBM SPSS AMOS for classroom instruction and data gathering/analysis.

Annually, Information Technology works with the Provost's office and Alliant faculty to determine which version of SPSS will be adopted for the school year. For the 2019-2020 academic year, SPSS v23 will continue to be the standard.

IBM SPSS and Amos on Campus Availability
The following statistics applications are installed and available for use on all Alliant classroom, and open lab computers:
  • IBM SPSS version 23 Premium Campus Edition
    • includes the following modules: Statistics Base, Advanced Statistics, Regression, Custom Tables, Data Preparation, Missing Values, Forecasting, Decision Trees, Direct Marketing, Complex Samples, Conjoint, Neural Networks, Bootstrapping, Categories and Exact Tests.
  • IBM Amos version 23

Alliant Desktop Computers
If you currently have SPSS installed on an Alliant issued desktop computer, your license for SPSS v23 and Amos v23 should update automatically for 2018-19. If you receive an expiration notice upon start up of SPSS, please submit a service request to ithelp@alliant.edu.

Alliant Laptop Computers
If you currently have SPSS installed on an Alliant issued laptop computer and require a new license code for 2018-19, please submit a service request for a 2018-19 SPSS v23 authorization code to ithelp@alliant.edu.


IBM SPSS Off-campus Availability
IBM SPSS Statistics v23 is available for Alliant issued laptops and/or "At Home" use, to Alliant Core Faculty and to Alliant Students who are currently enrolled in a statistics (or statistics-related) course, or currently working on a dissertation. IBM SPSS version 23 System Requirements
If you are a student or faculty member who is planning to install SPSS software on your personal computer, please be aware of the following minimum system requirements:

Windows
  • Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 (32- or 64-bit), 
  • Intel® or AMD x86 processor running at 1GHz or higher
  • Memory: 4GB RAM or more recommended
  • Minimum free drive space: 4x the size of your data file size. Example: 8GB free for 2GB SPSS data file.
  • DVD drive
  • Super VGA (1024x768) or higher-resolution monitor
  • Web browser: Current version of Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome 

Mac
  • Apple Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), 10.11 (El Capitan) and 10.12 (Sierra), 64-bit
  • Intel processor (32- and 64-bit)
  • Memory: 4GB RAM or more recommended
  • Minimum free drive space: 4x the size of your data file size. Example: 8GB free for 2GB SPSS data file.
  • DVD drive
  • Super VGA (1024x768) or higher-resolution monitor
  • Web browser: Current version Safari, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome 

Running the SPSS License Authorization Wizard
 
  1. From the Start menu, choose IBM SPSS Statistics, then IBM SPSS Statistics 23 License Authorization Wizard.

    NOTE: In order to run the License Authorization Wizard, you must be connected to the Internet. Any firewall software must either be temporarily disabled or directed to allow Internet connections from the Wizard. After authorization, you do not need to be connected to the Internet to run IBM SPSS or AMOS for Windows.
     
  2. When prompted to choose an authorization method, select Internet and enter your License Authorization Code. The Wizard automatically retrieves your license from IBM SPSS and permanently ties that license to your physical computer.
     
  3. If you are not currently running IBM SPSS v23, contact your campus IT Coordinator or the Information Technology Helpdesk at ithelp@alliant.edu or 858-635-4357, option 1.
